Last week, in light of New York Fashion Week’s return with its Spring/Summer 2022 show, we pondered the importance of trends and made some predictions with the expert insights of fashion designer Isabella Kron and En Vogue Boutique owner Leah Salzman Jacobson.

I’m pleased to share that our trend predictions were on point, and I’m especially pleased to shine the spotlight on John Martinez, the owner of John Martinez Productions. Martinez is a fashion show producer, stylist, and fashion director who has worked alongside many greats including Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, and Naeem Khan–just to name a few. I met Martinez last year, right before the pandemic hit us like a ton of bricks, backstage at a Saks Fifth Avenue fashion show. We are thrilled to get his first-hand take on the three top trends that emerged from what he called “a very busy NY Fashion Week.” Personally, I’m digging these trends and can see myself applying them to my wardrobe.

Trend 1

Leather and lace is a beautiful big new trend as showcased on the Michael Kors runway.

Trend 2

A romantic mood is in the air with pink emerging as a major color shining alongside with pastels in pale blues and blush.

Trend 3

We will be going crazy over plaids where country gingham patterns meet city sleek vibes.

With so many great shows on full display, I couldn’t resist asking Martinez which collections stood out for him.

“For me,” Martinez shared, “Naeem Khan of course was beyond fabulous! A true homage to glamour, set in a 1940s mood couture lounge with live music and a joie de vivre. Tom Ford was also very on, with an homage to New York City sleek with lots of gold chains and flare and not to mention the best cargo jackets. Michael Kors also stood out for luxury American sportswear. Nobody does it better than Mr. Michael Kors.”

One of the many great takeaways from fashion week in general is seeing not only the collections from well established designers, but also discovering new talent. Martinez says to keep a lookout for Rachel Comey, Victor Glemaud, and Maisie Wilen as emerging designers on the rise.

After this year’s successful NYFW was followed by the overly glam and eccentric couture at the Met Gala, Martinez told us “Overall, it’s good to see NYC back on its feet. It’s busy, expensive and fabulous–so bravo for NYC.” And bravo to us all for embracing new trends while staying true to our own individual sense of style. Now let’s rock those runway looks on the streets of South Florida.
