Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Enjoy brunch from Whipped, a boutique food truck in Muskegon

MUSKEGON, MI – A specialty food truck in Muskegon serves up sweet and savory brunch dishes.

Whipped, a Brunch Truck, launched this summer with a menu of sandwiches, bite-sized breakfast treats and sweet pastries.

“It was always the dream to own a food truck,” said owner Khali Johnston who runs the business with her husband Nick and two daughters, Emma and Aria.

Johnston trained at the Culinary Institute of Michigan until giving birth to her daughter about 12 years ago. After running a home bakery for years, Johnston decided during the COVID-19 pandemic to take the leap and buy a food truck.

Whipped offers dishes inspired by years of Sunday family brunches. Johnston said she crafted the menu to “bring that piece of us” to her customers.

“I probably worked on my menu for eight years because it was an idea in my head for quite a long time,” she said.

Sandwiches are a staple of the Whipped brunch truck.

The popular Bruncher sandwich piles black forest ham, Boursin cheese, white cheddar and a fried egg onto artisan everything bread for $13.

A creamy grilled cheese sandwich includes white cheddar, Boursin cheese and pesto on artisan everything bread for $11.

“This is one we just did at home all the time,” Johnston said.

For the sweet tooths, Whipped makes waffle bites prepared as mini cinnamon rolls pressed onto a waffle iron served with salted caramel icing during the fall. Ten waffle bites are available for $5.

Brunch meals can be paired with hot chocolate, French press coffee or a cold San Pellegrino.

Johnston says the food truck is a “stepping stone” to other catering ideas. She currently hosts a monthly Dinner Club where a surprise four-course meal is served to 20 guests for $50 a person.

“It’s a good time for people to sit with other people they don’t know and get to know each other,” said Johnston who provides talking point cards at the table.

The next private dinner is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 24.

Whipped has made appearances at the Rake Beer Project in Muskegon, the Salty Pecker Brewing Company in Norton Shores and the Found Cottage Mercantile Market in Hudsonville.

It will next be at Chow-Down Centertown in Grand Haven on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 1-7 p.m. and Farmhaus Cider Co. in Hudsonville, 5025 Stanton St., on Sunday, Oct. 17 from 2-6 p.m.

Whipped also does private catering for businesses, organizations and events.

More information about the food truck’s location is available on the Whipped, a Brunch Truck Facebook page and can be reached at (231) 683-0893.
